Overton Park, a haven for both people and pets offering something for the family!
Walking toward Overton Park on a sunny afternoon, I couldn't help but feel the excitement of a perfect day for walking, running, or even biking. My journey began on East Parkway North road, just after crossing the street. The warm weather and the sounds of traffic was very active during the day.
Gazebo Area
To my left, a sprawling open area caught my eye, complete with inviting picnic tables and a charming public gazebo. On weekends, this spot comes alive with residents cooking meals and hosting birthday parties, or simply enjoying a quick lunch. Towering trees provide shade, and I can't help but smile when a curious squirrel dashes by.
Trail
Pressing forward on the paved walking path, I watched as bikers and power walkers pass by me with determination. Feeling adventurous, I consider taking one of the trail paths that lead deeper into the woods. It's a perfect spot for bird watching or seeking solitude, away from the faint hum of planes overhead and the distant highway traffic.
Venturing to the other side of the park, I discover a haven for dog caretakers: a lively dog park. Just beyond it, there's even more to explore: a bustling playground for children and a serene lake inviting everyone for a leisurely stroll. Moving away from the lake, a massive open field unfolds before me, where people gather to fly kites, picnic, and play volleyball.
Veterans Plaza
Further along my walk, I stumble upon a solemn memorial honoring military soldiers throughout history. This plaza offers a moment of respite and reflection, allowing me to appreciate the stories told by statues and monuments. Some visitors chat on their phones, while others admire the nearby Memphis School of Arts building, now closed. I notice an electric bike rental option, perfect for those who prefer to explore on two wheels.
Does the park loop?
The park's paths seem to loop endlessly, with more traffic near the golf course, but the parked cars mostly line the road. Every so often, I hear music with deep bass emanating from a car, and I spot someone grooving to their own personal indoor music festival. I make a mental note to check the Levitt Shell music schedule for outdoor live tunes.
Throughout the year, Overton Park hosts a variety of events that cater to diverse interests of all people. The Levitt Shell, an iconic outdoor amphitheater, features a free concert series with local and national artists from various genres. Yoga classes, fitness boot camps, and outdoor movie nights fill the park's picturesque atmosphere, while the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art offers rotating exhibits and special events. Environmental initiatives, such as tree plantings and park clean-ups, engage the community in preserving Overton Park's natural beauty for generations to come. Truly, this park is a hub of cultural and recreational activities in the heart of Memphis. To find out more check out their website here!
